HISTORY The Thalia Lions Club was chartered on April 20 1966, and since then we have served the Virginia Beach Community continuously helping people with loss of sight and hearing and with diabetes.   But that’s not all. Our club’s history is rich in community projects.   I’ll start with Lion Eli Chertoff, our sixteenth 1981 president who passed away in 2010 at the age of 96.   As a son of Russian immigrants Lion Eli set up our scholarship account which has grown to over $50,000 and is now used for Princess Anne High School and Adult Learning Center scholarships. Our club has been packed with notable Lions and a wealth of service projects. No one represented these folks more than Lion Dallas Divelbiss. Door-to-door broom sales started out of Lion Dallas’ garage, followed by a picnic at his home. Then there’s Lion Ed DeLong serving Thalia Lions for 23 years. Lion Jeri Furman will be coming home from rehab on Friday Lion Dick Kreassig is home from the hospital and recuperating. Lion Aziz’s wife, Arian, is home recouping after having another back procedure to assist with pain resulting from her cancer treatments. Bland Contest

Lions Bland Music Competition   The Thalia Lions Club Bland Committee arranges an annual youth music scholarship contest in honor of James Bland, the famous composer of " Carry Me Back to Ole' Virginny ", Virginia's state song for many years. An escalating series of contests from club to state level results in significant scholarship awards to both vocal and instrumental contestants. The state level awards are scholarships of $3,000 – 1 st place, $2,500 – 2 nd place, and $2,000 – 3 rd place, and cash awards of $1,500 for 4 th , 5 th , and 6 th places for both vocal and instrumental finalists. The contest is open to any youth attending elementary, middle or junior or senior high school (or equivalent home-schooled level) and who is a resident of Virginia.   Only one club contest may be entered as the winners from each club contest progress to the next higher level.   Interested instrumentalists and vocalists may contact the Bland Contest Chairperson for t...
