John A. Watters, Jr. (March 10, 1938 - March 25, 2025) Col, USAF Ret, was born on March 10, 1938, the eldest son of John and Josephine Watters, in Port Arthur, TX. His childhood was spent exploring outside and his family frequently visited their “hobby” farm in southern Louisiana where he learned to hunt and fish in his pirogue in the swamps. As a teenager, the family moved to Mt. Lebanon, PA where he delivered newspapers and worked as a soda jerk at Mandell’s Pharmacy. He played clarinet in the Mt. Lebanon High School marching band and marched in the 1951 Rose Bowl parade. His hard work continued through his academic pursuits, attending Rice University in Houston, Texas, majoring in chemistry. He then married and entered Baylor University Medical and Graduate Schools simultaneously, earning an MS in Biochemistry and an MD. By graduation, he was the father of three young sons. Recycle Glasses

At the Nov 17, 2021 Rgular Meeting, Lion John Watters announced that we are temporarily pausing our eye glasses recycling activities because of excessive amounts of glasses. A group of Thalia Lions work at the recycling center once a month from 10 AM to noon on a Thursday morning every second Thursday each month.- Southside Eyeglass Recycling Center at 2040 Broadmoor Avenue, Chesapeake, VA 23323 . The work involves sorting out, repairing, testing and packaging eyeglasses so that they are ready for distribution. The service project was reinstated Oct 8, 2009. Bland Contest

Lions Bland Music Competition   The Thalia Lions Club Bland Committee arranges an annual youth music scholarship contest in honor of James Bland, the famous composer of " Carry Me Back to Ole' Virginny ", Virginia's state song for many years. An escalating series of contests from club to state level results in significant scholarship awards to both vocal and instrumental contestants. The state level awards are scholarships of $3,000 – 1 st place, $2,500 – 2 nd place, and $2,000 – 3 rd place, and cash awards of $1,500 for 4 th , 5 th , and 6 th places for both vocal and instrumental finalists. The contest is open to any youth attending elementary, middle or junior or senior high school (or equivalent home-schooled level) and who is a resident of Virginia.   Only one club contest may be entered as the winners from each club contest progress to the next higher level.   Interested instrumentalists and vocalists may contact the Bland Contest Chairperson for t...
